MDF and HDF
Chapters
In short
- 01MDF is a board made of wood fibres and glue. It has the same density through its whole thickness, so its edge can be routed and lacquered cleanly.
- 02That is why MDF is the first choice for shaped and lacquered fronts. Foil-wrapped fronts are made on it too.
- 03MDF is heavier than particleboard of the same thickness and, like particleboard, it holds a screw less well in the edge than in the face.
- 04Moisture-resistant MDF handles moisture better than standard MDF, but it is not waterproof. Its edges still have to be closed.
- 05HDF (high-density fibreboard, often called hardboard) is a thin, denser fibreboard, e.g. 3 mm. It is used for cabinet backs and drawer bottoms.
- 06Backs are often made of HDF coloured on one side, and that side faces the inside of the cabinet.
